Our Work
Habitats
Our beloved American landscape is an intricate patchwork of lands and waters that provide homes for our wildlife. Protecting these habitats has always been integral to the National Wildlife Federation’s work. In 1972, the Federation launched its first major program for habitat conservation, calling on Americans to support the creation of an area that would protect our nation’s most iconic species—the bald eagle. While the bald eagle has since recovered, many species' habitats still need our help.
Wildlife Conversation
Today, more than one-third of all U. S. species are in trouble—from bison to butterflies and from bighorn sheep to bumblebees. The National Wildlife Federation works to not only stop the decline of American wildlife populations, but to increase their numbers—even as wildlife adjust to a warming world.
Climate
Healthy environments support healthy wildlife. Twenty-first century threats to our environment—including diseases, pollution, climate inequity, and a warming climate—threaten wildlife and people alike touching every facet of our lives. The National Wildlife Federation unites Americans addressing these critical challenges and in protecting our wildlife and their habitats. By doing so, we're not just helping our wildlife to flourish—we're helping people live healthier lives, too.

When we save wildlife, we save ourselves.
More than one-third of best-known plant and animal species across the country are at heightened risk of disappearing. Facing shrinking habitats, climate change, disease and other threats, wildlife need our help. The bipartisan Recovering America’s Wildlife Act will prevent extinction and ensure the full diversity of wildlife thrive for future generations. This bill is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in states, Tribes, and territories’ on-the-ground work to conserve and restore species through collaboration and innovation.
